It’s time to erase your fears of being victimized of violent crimes. Make your personal safety your number one priority!
Living in an urban area, you should always be aware of your surroundings when you are out in public as you may encounter situations where you could be in danger from criminals. Also, if you live alone, you should also take precautions for your personal safety. We at Unlimited Security want you to always be safe wherever you are and believe that while security systems can definitely protect your home, you should know personal safety tips to keep yourself protected at all times. We would like to share some tips from the National Crime Prevention Council on how to keep yourself safe from violent crimes.
- Do not walk or run by yourself early in the morning or late at night when streets are deserted. Always have a friend with you if you like to walk or run in your neighborhood at these times.
- Do not carry more money on you than you need on a particular day. If you do have to carry a large amount of money, never let it be seen. This policy also goes for cell phones, tablets, expensive jewelry, and expensive handbags.
- If you get the feeling someone is following you, change your direction or cross the street. If you are still being followed, quickly walk to an open store, restaurant, or even a lighted house. Never be afraid to yell for help if you feel you are in danger from someone following you.
- Always park your car in well-lit areas with good visibility. Try to park close to walkways, stores, and people. When you return to your car, be sure to have your key out and ready to unlock your door.
- Never leave your car unlocked, even if it is in your own driveway. Also, do not leave your car running unattended, even in the cold winter months in your own driveway. Some cities actually have laws against running a car with no one inside.
- If someone tries to enter your car, do everything you can to keep him or her out of your car. Also, if someone tries to force you into his or her car, do everything you can to avoid getting inside.
- If your boyfriend or girlfriend has abused you in any way, never meet him or her alone. Do not let this person into your car or house if you are alone.
- If you are a battered spouse, call the police or other authorities immediately after any abuse. Assault is still a crime even if it is committed by a spouse, other family member, or a friend. If you ever feel unsafe for yourself and your children, call a domestic violence crisis hotline and leave the house immediately.
- If you are mugged or if someone tries to rob you, give them your property. You can always cancel your credit cards, but you cannot get your life back if you try to resist and fight. Always assume an attacker has a weapon.
- If you do get robbed or are assaulted, call the police immediately. Describe your attacker as accurately as you can as this can help the police find your attacker and keep others from being attacked.
