The Fall season is quickly approaching, and with it comes the start of school. For families with younger children, keeping them safe is always the top priority. Study up on some of these back to school safety tips to keep your kids out of harm’s way this upcoming school year.

Memorize Important Info

Make sure your children know how to reach you or another adult at all times. Knowing their home address and the phone numbers of any parents or close family members can be a big help should they find themselves lost or in an unusual situation.

It also a good idea to have your children memorize emergency contact numbers and the locations of police stations and schools. Having places to turn in times of need can make a huge difference when it comes to staying safe.

Traffic & School Bus Awareness

Traffic can get crazy when it comes to carpooling and hauling children back and forth from school and after school activities. Make sure that your children are aware of what various traffic signals mean and teach them to always check that all intersections are clear before crossing any roads. Running into the street suddenly and ignoring “Don’t Walk” signals should never be an option.

If your child rides the school bus, make sure they know which bus they are supposed to be on and that they never get on an alternative one. Listening to the supervisors who are monitoring drop offs is vital in maintaining safe boundaries, and no one should attempt to board until the bus has come to a complete stop.

Lastly, take the time to educate your child on how vital it is to never get into a car with someone they do not know. Even acquaintances can have bad intentions when it comes to your child’s safety. The only people your child should get in a car with are those to whom you have specifically given the okay. Strangers should be ignored and kept at a distance.

Playground Safety

With school, comes a lot of playground time for younger children. Make sure that your child knows to listen to the rules the teacher on duty has set and to play on the equipment appropriately. There are always things around to trip on or run into, so teach your child the importance of being aware of their surroundings.

As a parent, check out your child’s school playground when you have the opportunity. Report any concerns, such as sharp or hazardous-looking hardware, unsafe fall surfaces, or inadequate supervision, to appropriate officials.
